Detectives are appealing for witnesses following the report of a serious assault that occurred on Duke Street near Shakers Cocktail Bar in Whitehaven at around 0:47am today (Oct 7)
The incident is reported to have involved two men, one of the men in his 40s suffered a serious head injury and was taken to West Cumberland Hospital.
A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.
Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the two men or the assault to contact police.
