A man who admitted grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article after stabbing another man with a knife has been sentenced to prison.

Graeme Joe Armstrong, 35, of Stonegarth, Carlisle was sentenced to 4 years and 3 months at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday (18 July) after previously admitting the offences.

The court heard how, on 13 April 2024 Armstrong had spoken with the victim, who was known to him, on the phone before driving to the victim’s home address.

He arrived holding a knife and shouting “come on then” before running at the victim attacking him. The victim using a shovel to try and defend himself.

The two men fought, with the victim being stabbed three times in the leg.

The victim was taken to Cumberland Infirmary for his injuries to be treated.

Police attended the home address of a friend of Armstrong’s the day after the assault, where they located Armstrong hiding under a bed.

In his police interview, Armstrong told officers that his actions were in self-defence, telling officers it was the victim who was in possession of the knife and not him.

However, Armstrong admitted the offences at court.

Detective Constable Gabrielle Nicholson said: “When Armstrong attended the victim’s address, he was not only in possession of a knife but immediately produced it in a threatening manner.

“It is inexcusable for someone to arm themselves in such a way, let alone to go on to use a knife as part of an assault.

“Any assault with a knife has the potential to end in tragedy. We take offences such as these extremely seriously and will prosecute those who carry knives on our streets.”
