Operation Spotlight – our dedicated road safety op targeting the Fatal Four – continues with more drink and drug arrests.

In the early hours of this morning (3 April) officers came across a black Volkswagen Golf which made a sudden turn near the Cross Keys pub, Penrith, before the two occupants got out and fled towards a nearby estate.

Officers gave chase and caught up to both.

One was arrested for failing to provide a specimen. She was subsequently charged with this offence and will appear at court later this month.

The other failed a roadside drug test, the results indicating cocaine, and was arrested on suspicion of drug driving. He was subsequently released under investigation to allow time for blood test results.

Last night (2 April), officers arrested a 56-year-old man sat in a vehicle outside a pub in Kirkby Stephen.

The man was sat in a Ford Transit van with the keys. He was found to be over the drink-drive limit and arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

He remains in police custody this afternoon (2 April).
